George Moses Horton
(1798 -1884), known as the enslaved bard of North Carolina. Horton composed stanzas in his head based on rhythms found in popular hymns and recited his poems publicly, often for students at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Public Enemy 
Formed by Chuck D and Flavor Flav on Long Island in 1985, hip-hop group Public Enemy famously rose to prominence for their political messages – as well as addressing American racism and the American media in their songs. Songs like "Fight the Power," "Rebel Without a Pause," and "Can't Truss It" will always be considered stone cold rap classics. If you're looking for a great album of theirs to get you in the Black History Month spirit, we highly recommend their sophomore record It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back. Full of rebellious ideas and resistance, it confronts the complacency found in the system of racially-charged 80s Reagan-era America, and promotes radical activism still necessary in today's day and age.

Hattie McDaniel
Hattie McDaniel showed that strength and determination can get you anywhere in life back in the 1940s. When McDaniel became the first Black person to win an Oscar for Gone With the Wind, she was forced to sit in the backroom at the Academy Awards. She wasn’t allowed to attend the premiere and received a lot of criticism for playing the “Mammy”. But still paved the way for Black representation in the Hollywood industry.

Viola Davis
Davis changed the game from the start. Starring in the famous TV show, How To Get Away With Murder, she has had the most Oscar nominations for an African American actress. She received her first Oscar nomination for Doubt in 2008. But won her first Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 2017, for Denzel Washington’s movie, Fences for which she also won a Golden Globe. Viola Davis was the first African American to achieve “The Triple Crown of Acting”.
